A look back at the information and consultation meetings held in April 2025

The Onimiki Renewable Energy team would like to thank everyone who took part in the English-language information and consultation meeting on April 22 and the Participatory Thematic Workshop on April 23. Input from the public and organizations is essential to develop the project and write the impact study, currently scheduled for submission in late 2025 or early 2026.

Meetings were held both face-to-face in Témiscaming and online. A report will be made public in the coming weeks.

A few highlights from the information and consultation meeting

The April 22 meeting was held in English to inform and consult the widest possible audience.

Among the questions and issues addressed were the following:

  • The integration of projected infrastructures in the Onimiki North sector and their impact on the presence of McMartin Point residents;
  • The impact of the project on the water quality of the different watercourse and on the various species of flora and fauna;
  • The financing of the community project and the use of funds generated by the partners once the project is commissioned;
  • Information dissemination, consultation and the regulatory process.

Some highlights from Participatory Thematic Workshop #1

The first Participatory Thematic Workshop took place under the theme “Onimiki project study areas and environmental inventories”.

CIMA+ experts were on hand to share information and answer questions. Transfert Environnement et Société led the meeting and the participative component.

Here are the main issues that emerged from the meeting for the project’s three study areas.

Laniel sector

  • Visual modelling for Grande chute.
  • Inventories required for chimney swift, eagle and moose.
  • Economic impacts on Parc national d’Opémican.
  • Erosion risks and impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

North sector

  • Hydric impacts on reptiles and amphibians.
  • Soil and excavated material management.
  • Peregrine falcon and turtle inventories required.
  • Noise and visual impact.
  • Presence of wetlands.

South sector

  • Preservation of heritage buildings.
  • Impacts on aquatic fauna and spawning grounds.
  • Effects of water flows on recreational activities.
  • Consideration of native fishing sites.

Next steps

The next participatory thematic workshop will take place on Monday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Salon Desjardins of Le Centre building in Témiscaming. It will also be possible to join online. The theme and registration details will be announced in the next few days.
