A delegation from Témiscamingue visited the Val-Jalbert power plant in Lac-Saint-Jean on Sunday, March 8. The representatives wanted to learn more about the visual and acoustic integration of this hydroelectric power plant into its surroundings in order to draw inspiration for the integration of the Onimiki power plant into the Témiscamingue environment.
Martin Lefebvre, Prefect of the MRC de Témiscamingue (MRCT), Alain Gauthier, Mayor of the City of Témiscaming, and Bertrand Gélinas, City Councilor for the City of Témiscaming, took part in the visit.
The Onimiki power plant would be located on the shores of Lake Témiscamingue in the McMartin Point area, where there are vacation properties. Visual and acoustic integration makes perfect sense.
“Our visit to the Val-Jalbert power plant was very informative. Since the MRCT is a partner in the Onimiki project, it is very important that we be well informed to make good decisions. After what we saw and heard, I believe it is possible to develop a project that is well integrated into the environment. The experience of our partner Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan will be very useful in achieving this,” said Martin Lefebvre, Prefect of the MRC de Témiscamingue.
About Val-Jalbert power plant
The Val-Jalbert power plant is considered the calling card of the community energy model. The project is located on a heritage site and is a major tourist attraction for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Great importance was therefore placed on promoting its integration during its design.
Its architectural design highlights the use of wood, a feature that earned it a provincial architecture award. It is built into the rock to minimize its visual impact. In addition, to minimize noise as much as possible, the building is constructed of concrete, and a glycol-based system is used to cool the equipment.
The partners of Énergie hydroélectrique Ouiatchouan, which operates the Val-Jalbert power plant, are Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan, the MRC de Maria-Chapdelaine, the MRC du Domaine-du-Roy RCM, and the municipality of Chambord. It should be noted that Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan is also a partner of Onimiki Renewable Energy.
