KEBAOWEK, JANUARY 22, 2026 – Onimiki Renewable Energy shares an update regarding its community-based energy project. The project originally called for two power plants, one in the north (called Onimiki North) and one in the south (Onimiki South, in the town of Témiscaming). After reviewing the technical and economic feasibility of the southern plant, this option has now been shelved. Analyses show that the conditions are not in place to justify the construction of this second plant.
The new version of the Onimiki project therefore calls for a single power plant. The Onimiki North power plant would be located approximately 30 kilometers north of Témiscaming. The projected capacity would be between 60 and 70 megawatts. The ongoing environmental, technical, and economic analyses currently underway will determine the best scenario for optimizing the project’s design.
“The Onimiki project is still under evaluation phase and is becoming clearer as our studies and consultations progress. This decision is responsible and reduces the complexity of the project. Our goal remains to propose a promising project for First Nations and Témiscamingue,” said David McLaren, President of Onimiki Renewable Energy.
Next steps
Information and consultation meetings will be announced in the coming weeks as part of the environmental impact assessment process. These meetings will provide an opportunity to update the public on the project, answer questions, and continue the dialogue with local residents and organizations. The environmental impact study is expected to be submitted in mid-2026.
