In November 2023, Hydro-Québec announced its intention to add between 150 and 200 terawatt-hours (TW) of electricity to the grid by 2050, including 60 TW by 2035. The utility is evaluating a number of options to achieve this goal.
Onimiki Renewable Energy believes it can do its part to achieve this goal. With 70 megawatts of power, our project is modest compared to the target, but our priority remains to propose a project adapted to the environment of our territory. What’s more, the annual output of the two power plants will be concentrated mainly in the peak winter season.
Finally, among his five priorities, Hydro-Québec’s CEO stressed the importance of working more closely with Aboriginal communities to achieve “economic reconciliation”. Onimiki Renewable Energy is made up of four partners, three of whom are Aboriginal: Kebaowek First Nation, Wolf Lake First Nation and Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan. They are collaborating with the MRC de Témiscamingue to bring the project to fruition.
